TheOriginal Utopia
This first seriesportrays five communist leaders: Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao. The painter preserved their most striking attributes, butreplaces their facial features with human bodies. These bodies are completelylacking in individuality, and have been unwillingly arranged into differentshapes. This series symbolizes a particular set of circumstances, being thewholesale bloodletting that accompanied communist practices in the 19th and20th centuries. At this point, however, the images of these leaders are allclear, which means that their political ideals and the political disasterswhich resulted from their pursuit of those ideals are all original, clear anddiscernable. But this is just the primary stage.

Metamorphic Utopia
Inthis second series, each revolutionary’s outline is still recognizable, thoughit has taken on certain elements from the other revolutionaries. As a result, forexample, Marx is five ninths Marx, one ninth Engels, one ninth Lenin, one ninthStalin and one ninth Mao. This implies that as history develops, the originaltenets of the revolutionaries become increasingly unclear as each revolutionarydraws selectively from the others to affirm the legitimacy of his own politicalactions, while in fact, each revolutionary is actually forcing his ownpolitical will into the texts of the other revolutionaries, using his own ideasto explain others.

Transformed Utopia
UnlikeMetamorphic Utopia, the third series does not further appropriate fragments ofother leaders into each portrait, but each revolutionary’s face becomes evenless recognizable as the painter completely shuffled the order of OriginalUtopia. Now, each leader’s image is completely unrecognizable, making for onlya series of interesting lines, color fields and meaningless shapes. Here, asthe communist movement engages in wholesale distortion of the revolutionaryclassics to meet its political needs, the original meaning of utopia in thehearts of these revolutionaries have been completely dismembered.

Other Shore Utopia
In this final stage, all 45 picture sections have been brought together to form agiant mural, a mural of bright colors, rich connotations. It is like a boat inthe sea, an island in the ocean, the horizon baring the slightest hint ofclouds. This is the final dissolution of utopia. All lofty political ideals andall of the political sins committed in the pursuit of these ideals have beenfused into an indescribable scene. There is no discerning, and no need todiscern. Utopia has become the “other shore,” rather than the perfect ultimateend of historical development on this side of life. It no longer has anyconnection to anyone in this mortal world.
