北京全藝社將展出若瑟‧狄莫的最新作品，展覽“著迷─若瑟‧狄莫新作展”由潘廣宜策展，是藝術家首次在北京舉行的個人展覽，並於4月28日假位於北京798藝術區的北京全藝社空間開幕。是次展覽也是北京享負盛名的國際攝影節“草場地攝影季•阿爾勒在北京”的活動之一。

狄莫的作品，是對身份、多重品格、夢境與現實、美麗與恐懼、以及可視與不可視之間的隱喻對立的探索，這意味著作品不只是純粹的視覺藝術，概念上必須與當代社會及其價值觀一同詮釋。

藝術家利用了概念和達達藝術的詞彙，進行了一連串艱钜的實驗，並不斷以典故和隱喻，反映出存在於公開與私人的幻想和確定性。同時，在探索美麗與恐懼之間，他對意識和表現力發出提問。狄莫最新的作品，採用了黑白照片來刻劃若隱若現、不完整的人物，從而揭露及強調藝術家自身的人性與感情的層面。

“著迷─若瑟‧狄莫新作展”一共展出32張藝術家在過去兩年、至今仍在創作的系列“The Ghost”的攝影照片。作品清晰地表達了藝術家對創造錯覺的意願，他把受到不同程度影響的東方和西方的環境和情景集結起來，對夢境進行探索。是次展出的作品，均包含著一個特定的攝影理論，並把東方的道教和禪宗哲學與西方的慨念藝術和當代哲學結合，創造出與別不同的獨特風格。

有如策展人潘廣宜所說，「若瑟‧狄莫的黑白攝影系列作品─“著迷〈Spellbound〉”讓人不由自主的聯想起莊周夢蝶的故事，一個無法區分真實和虛幻，卻不得不被美麗影像所吸引的神話；即使虛無飄渺卻永恆存在於人們的腦海裡。這些黑白攝影系列作品猶如仙境般的畫面，若隱若現的女性柔美形體引人入勝，讓人深深著迷。是如夢似幻的莊周夢蝶境界，是禪的不可言語。」

“The Ghost”系列所描繪的，是若隱若現的“女性形體”，其象徵性的敘述方式，體現出藝術家目前執著於表達美麗背後的恐懼。光與影之間的配合，以及它們對系列作品所構成的視覺效果，有助觀者走進其虛擬的世界之中。

這些“形體”沒有清晰的敘述，亦沒有堅不可摧的情感目的。藝術家把自己化身成一個偷窺者，使其完成之作擁有一個多重解讀的形式、內容及含意。“著迷”的作品有著不同的大小，其中兩幅大型作品，規模之大使其充滿張力和強度；另外12幅大中型的作品，則透過畫廊的牆壁，引領我們追求藝術之美感；餘下的18幅小型作品，以一組的形式並排在一起，有如同一作品一般。

“著迷”的作品演繹了對幻想、錯覺、以及一些可把我們從身處的環境中、甚至從自身抽離的需要，即使是一瞬間也是值得的。這是對無常的圖像、思索、現實與夢境的探索；這是對敵對的宣言，因錯覺己昇華至意願。

若瑟‧狄莫是澳門最受曯目及多產的藝術家之一，作品尤其集中於攝影、影像和裝置。他就自己對探索美麗和恐懼的興趣，形容為“我們時代的模範”，道說：「恐懼是我們最大的弱點，而美麗則是我們最大的成就；錯覺給予我們夢想的能力，而夢想則賦予我們力量去面對現實，繼續生活，生生不息。我們每一個人都有夢想的能力，亦可假裝現實。生活的魅力就在這裡。」

出生於葡萄牙里斯本的若瑟‧狄莫，過去的18年在澳門定居與工作。他的作品大多在葡萄牙及亞洲展出，但亦不時在多個歐洲國家及美國舉行展覽。近年，他與全藝社於展覽上合作，其作品於政府與私人收藏中均被展出。

 José Drummond’s works will be displayed at AFA Beijing

AFA Beijing is pleased to announce a new exhibition by José Drummond. Spellbound, curated by Pan Kwanyi, is the artist's first solo exhibition in Beijing and will open on 28 of April at AFA Beijing Gallery in the 798 district. The show is included in “Caochangdi Photospring - Arles in Beijing,” the prestigious Beijing International Photography Festival.
The work of José Drummond is based on his investigation about identity, multi-personality, dreams and realities, beauty and fear and the metaphorical opposition between visibility and invisibility. This also means that his works are not just purely visual, but are to be understood as an engagement with contemporary society and its values under a conceptual approach.
José Drummond uses the vocabulary of Conceptual and Dadaist art for laborious experimentation and he constantly plays on allusions and metaphors, disclosing public and private fantasies and certainties. His questioning of awareness and representation is also explored through his search on beauty and fear. His recent work is characterized by the playful use of black and white photography where the introduction of human figures, mostly hidden or incomplete, unmasks and emphasizes his human and emotional side.
In Spellbound, José Drummond shows 32 photos of his latest ongoing series “The Ghost”. The artist has been working on this sequence of works for the last two years. The pictures explicitly show his desire to create illusions. The artist collected environments and situations, with diverse influences, from the east and the west, where the world of dreams is investigated. The works shown at the gallery have a specific photographic theory applied to it, which makes them unique in style, helping to blend Taoism and Zen Buddhism with conceptual art and contemporary western philosophy.
Just as the curator Kwanyi Pan saying “José Drummond’s black-and-white photography series Spellbound echoes the story of Zhuangzi’s Dreaming of a Butterfly. The myth features beautiful images that blur the line between reality and fantasy, remaining in people’s minds forever even though they seem vague. Photographic works in this black and white series present fantasy-like scenes: gentle female figures loom in the pictures, intriguing the viewer. This is the fantasy aspect of Zhuangzi’s Dreaming of a Butterfly, the unspeakable Zen.”
In “The Ghost” series the depictions of the female figure, hidden or revealed, are assembled into an emblematic narrative sequence that illustrates his current obsession on illustrating the underneath horror of beauty. The delightful game between light and shadow, and the way they end up constructing the visual compositions of this series, helps the viewer to immerse on his imaginary worlds.
These figures do not have a clear narrative, or any impenetrable emotional purpose. The artist presents himself as a voyeur and the resulting works are open to a wide range of different readings in terms of form, content and meaning. The works in Spellbound vary in scale with two of them having a dramatic force due to the intensity provided by the large size. 12 other works from medium and large formats take us on this quest for beauty through the walls of the gallery. The other 18 small sized works are aligned in a singular composition, as only one work.
José Drummond’s Spellbound is about the need for fantasy, for illusion, for something that is capable of taking us out of here, out of ourselves, even if it is just for a moment. It's about investigating the impermanence of images, thoughts, realities and dreams. It’s a declaration of antagonism where illusions are elevated to the state of desire.

José Drummond is one of Macau most fascinating and prolific artists and focuses his work mainly on photography, video and installation. He describes his interest in beauty and fear as the paradigm of our times stating that “fear is our biggest weakness and beauty our strongest achievement.” He also states: “illusions are what give us the ability to dream and this capacity to dream is what gives us strength to face reality and move on with our life completing the circle. We are all capable of dreaming and of pretending reality. That’s our life spell.”
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, José Drummond lives and works in Macau for the past 18 years. His work has been exhibited mostly in Portugal and Asia, but also in many European countries as well as in the United States. Recently he has been exhibiting his work with AFA. His work is represented in private and public collections.
