| Fourth edition of ShContemporary wraps up on high note |

The fourth annual edition of ShContemporary came to end on Sunday September 12th after five event-filled days at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Strong sales from both Asian and Western galleries were reported, while the Fair confirmed its position as Asia’s most experimental and continually evolving fair.

Nearly 30,000 visitors streamed into the venue over the five day period, with the first three days reserved exclusively for VIP guests. International and Asian collectors and art professionals, in addition to renowned art world academics, converged and added to the buzz amongst the 83 galleries.
The conference on collecting Asian contemporary art, organized in collaboration with Chinese art critic Hou Hanru, drew a full house on September 9th. Invited speakers included Tan Boon Hui, Singapore Art Museum; Kathy Halbreich, MoMA New York, Frances Morris, Tate Modern London; Rajii Kuroda, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum; Suhanya Raffel, Queensland Art Gallery; Alexandra Munroe, Solomon Guggenheim Museum NY; Wang Huangsheng, CAFA Museum; Zhang Zikang, Today Art Museum; Uli Sigg, top collector on Chinese contemporary art – Switzerland. Alexandra Munroe spoke of ShContemporary’s place in the Shanghai art scene. “The show feels messier, edgier, younger, and more experimental (than other fairs in the area).”
Exhibitors reported steady sales starting on the Preview on September 8th. Long March Space confirmed profitable sales as soon as the Fair opened. A 2006 sculpture by Zhan Wang was sold to a Taiwanese buyer in the first hour, while two of Zhu Yu’s works were sold to a Shanghainese buyer shortly after. Tina Keng Gallery reported excellent sales: 95% of works including the majority of Xu Jiang’s Sunflower series of large-scale paintings were sold by the second day to Asian collectors. Long time exhibitor Galleria Continua received great interest from Chinese, Taiwanese and Indonesian collectors, with a major new sculpture by Antony Gormley selling to a Chinese buyer. Galleria Continua’s director Mario Cristiani said that “ShContemporary has definitely secured its place in Asia”. |

18 Gallery – Madga Danysz Gallery (Shanghai and Paris) were pleased to report that 95% of displayed works were sold. Eigen+Art Gallery from Berlin received keen interest on works by Neo Rauch and Tim Eitel. Neo Rauch’s painting Kanal, 1995, priced in the high six figures, was quickly reserved, in addition to Matthias Weischer’s House, 1999, also priced in the six figures. Gallery Cagla Cabaoglu (Istanbul) sold all their works at the fair to museums in Beijing and Taipei. First time exhibitors Kalfayan Galleries (Athens and Thessaloniki) saw positive response to Art House Shanghai Award winner Antonis Donef’s works of ink and paper laid down on canvas.
The group show Discoveries: Re-Value which consisted of 26 artists asked pertinent questions about the meaning of value from different perspectives also received commercial recognition. Invited speakers of the Re-Value conference on the construction and consumption of value in contemporary art are: Anna Waldmann, The Sherman Foundation; Simon Groom, National Galleries of Scotland; Shen Qibin Himalayas Museum of Art; Lu Jie, Long March Space; Sylvain Levy, DSL Collection; Deddy Kusuma, collector-Indonesia; Anders Peterson, ArtTactic; Philip Tinari, LEAP Magazine; Hallam Chow, H2 Foundation for Art and Education, Qiao Zhibin, collector-Beijing and Gong Nana, UACC.
ShContemporary’s collector stimulation initiative The Asia Pacific Collector Development Programme, CDP, celebrated its’ successful first year by throwing a lavish cocktail and dinner for distinguished guests at the M1NT which was sponsored by The Singapore Freeport and which 350 guests attended. At the VIP party which followed the dinner 1500 art world guests mingled while enjoying dramatic 360° views of Shanghai. |
