F2 Gallery: A Journey to New York
Zeng Fanzhi's new paintings are currently showing at Acquavella Gallery in New York City, USA.
Zeng Fanzhi is undoubtedly one of the most important Chinese contemporary artists to date. His works have been shown around the world, and collectors and museums alike seek to add his paintings to their collections.
Fabien and Lucy Fryns traveled to New York to be a part of the dazzling show opening on April 1st to show their support to their close friend.
Zeng Fanzhi Opening at Acquavella Gallery
Acquavella Gallery is only a short walk from The Carlyle Hotel, the crown jewel of the New York hotel scene, and a favorite of the art world establishment. We arranged for all of us to stay at The Carlyle, truly a home away from home, during our time in New York.
Upon arrival at the opening on Wednesday, April 1st at 7pm, the exhibition was already buzzing with people and excitement, despite the pouring rain outside.
Upon entering Acquavella Gallery, there are two rooms on the ground floor where recent landscape paintings of the Wuhan born artist are on display.
In the room on the right, a work with a man in a dark pink jacket stands out – he seems lost in the branches of a dense forest-like landscape. The work had already been sold before the opening, to European collectors who had flown in from their winter base in Miami. A self-portrait of the artist, painted on August 8th, 2008, the day the Olympics opened in Beijing, was also pre-sold, incidentally to the same collectors from Europe.
In the larger room on the left, there are five works on display, among them two very large museum quality works, one of which shows a landscape with a lion.
At 280 x 540 cm and priced at US$ 1.6M, it has not yet found a buyer, but will most likely be sold to a museum in the USA.
Another electrifying landscape painted in bright greens is found on the far wall on the same floor- it was sold for US$ 950,000 during the opening to a client who had flown in especially from London with his wife and daughter.
As they did not yet own a work from the recent portrait series that is on exhibition upstairs, they bought another portrait of a young boy as well for US$ 395,000.
A key piece of the exhibition, a portrait of a man in a blue tuxedo, even spurred a small fight between an American and a Spanish collector when they both laid eyes on it. In the end, the American collector became the proud owner of this very elegant work, priced at US$ 395,000.
Despite the worsening economic situation, eight paintings were sold during the opening night, which is an astounding success in the current financial situation.
Apart from the art, there was a fair bit of celebrity sighting going on as well.
A-listers such as Zhang Ziyi, Vivo Nevo and Wendi Murdoch attended, as well as Christo and Jeanne Claude to name a few.
A dinner for about 80 VIP guests followed at the trendy Chinese restaurant “Philippe”.
After four days in New York, Fabien and Lucy returned to Beijing.
Soon after, the pair traveled to the I.M. Pei Suzhou Museum for Zeng Fanzhi’s solo exhibition “Narcissus Looks for Echo”, organized by Art Mia Foundation and sponsored by China Merchants Bank.
The stunning museum was graced with 22 paintings of the artist’s Landscape series and the setting could not have been more harmonious in keeping with the nature of this complex body of work. The opening was followed by a VIP dinner, courtesy of Louis Vuitton.
