Galerie Artodrome intends to be a bridge between the eastern and the western cultures. Right from its foundation in 2005, its portfolio has included not only new emerging artists from Europe, but also top artists from, for example, Korea. Since 2008, Galerie Artodrome can also offer some precious printworks by the most famous Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang and further classical modern artists. In the winter term of 2008, the gallery made an important step from out of the province of Germany into the capital, Berlin, which is now said to have become the secret capital of art in Europe. The gallery shows the great variety of contemporary art such as original paintings, drawings, graphics, installation and sculpture work.

Brief profile of the artist and artwork (in 300 words):

A washing-machine, a giclée-photograph of a nude dancing with a skeleton and a dance-macabre on a bridge- how does this go together?

 

Christine Kunkler puzzles the viewers of today´s world with her unusual altar. The altar is the traditional place where people think of their own life, their death and God. The illustrations around such places are there to help people come to think of these fundamental issues. “The Woman Altar” shows a bridge that leads from this life to the next. In the sense of the medieval statement “Ora et labora!” (Pray and work!) the washing machine fits in well in the altar piece.

The washing- machine- the "water-machine"- is the symbol of female house-work all around the globe. For Kunkler, it is also a symbol of globalization itself. One puts something into the system and it comes out in a different state, just like one throws away plastic bottles in the USA, and the Chinese make jumpers out of them.

Everywhere in the world, water has become more and more important and precious- it is also water that links all the continents together. So the idea of water as a symbol for globalization is taken up in the above front picture of the nude walking towards the infinite sea. She holds a skeleton by the hand which itself drags behind him all the values of the world in skeleton-like toys- a car, a house... The nude is without clothes to show that everybody will walk towards death without any valuables of this world.

Altars always remind human beings of their limitations, of being vulnerable and of having to die and leave this life. In the inside of the altar-piece, life is depicted as a bridge. Many women in different situations and from different ethnic backgrounds all walk by themselves over that bridge accompanied only by the jolly death- figures like in medieval depictions of the "Dance macabre". Since medieval times the situation of the women has changed, though in many parts of the world, it seems to be still "medieval". The altar only features women,-or more generally speaking the female characteristics in all human beings that are traditionally contrary to the warrior-like "Mars"- elements in humanity. It points to the old system of values which has not changed since the old days though we now live in a globalized world.
